It is mainly prepared by precipitation method by adding hydrofluoric acid to terbium salt solution, or by reacting terbium hydroxide with hydrofluoric acid to produce terbium fluoride hydrate, and then heating in vacuum to remove the water of crystallisation.
Optical materials: Terbium can be used in the preparation of optical glass, optical fibres, etc. It can improve the refractive index and transmittance of the materials, and has important applications in optical communications and laser technology.
