Silicon disulfide crystals have various structural types, mainly the following three types:
α-type SiS2 crystals are hexagonal closest packing structures with layered structures, and the three-dimensional crystal structure is maintained by the interaction force of van der Waals forces between layers. The unit cell parameters of α-type silicon disulfide crystals are a=3.086 nm, c=5.058 nm, and the crystal density is 2.97 g/cm³.
β-type SiS2 crystals are tetragonal closest packing structures with layered structures, and the S-S bond distance between adjacent layers is equal to the S-S bond length within the layer. The unit cell parameters of β-type silicon disulfide crystal are a=b=c=0.382 nm, and the crystal density is 2.66 g/cm³.
γ-type SiS2 crystal is a long-period cubic crystal structure, with the properties of α- and β-type SiS2 crystals, its lattice constant is a=1.2067 nm, and the crystal density is 2.18 g/cm³.
Silicon disulfide has relatively stable chemical properties, high hardness, and is not easily affected by physical effects such as thermal expansion. Therefore, it is often used to prepare ceramic materials, catalysts, friction agents, etc. In the electronics industry, it is also widely used in the manufacture of semiconductors and solar cells.
