Silicon oxide, chemical formula SiO2, is an inorganic compound. It is a colorless, transparent crystal with high melting point and high thermal stability. It is insoluble in water, but can react with alkali and acid to produce corresponding salts.

VIMATERIAL can provide silicon dioxide powder, particles, targets, and wafers.

Structure of silicon oxide

SiO2 crystals have a variety of crystal forms, and its basic structural unit is a tetrahedron, with 4 O atoms around each Si, Si in the center and O at the four vertices; there are 6 silicon atoms and 6 oxygen atoms on the smallest ring. Many such tetrahedrons are connected by O at the vertices, and each O is shared by two tetrahedrons, that is, each O is combined with 2 Si.

In fact, SiO2 crystals are three-dimensional network structures composed of Si and O in a ratio of 1:2. Therefore, SiO2 is usually used to represent the composition of silicon dioxide. SiO4 tetrahedron exists not only in SiO2 crystals, but also in all silicate ores, and is the basic skeleton of the colorful silicate world.

Physical properties

It has the properties of high hardness, high temperature resistance, shock resistance, and electrical insulation. It can transmit visible light, as well as red and ultraviolet rays.

Chemical properties

SiO2 is an acidic oxide, and the corresponding highest hydrate is silicic acid (H2SiO3). Silicon dioxide is chemically inactive and does not react easily with water and most acids. It can usually only react with alkaline oxides to form salts. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is an acid that can react with it. (There is also hot concentrated phosphoric acid)

Application of silicon oxide

1. Used in the chemical field

Silicon oxide is an adsorbent that can absorb harmful gases, moisture, etc., to prevent deliquescence, pollution, etc. It is widely used in catalysts, separation agents, anti-corrosion materials and other fields.

2. Used in the medical field

Silicon dioxide can be used as a drug stabilizer, rheological agent, humectant, abrasive, etc. In the process of drug production, silicon dioxide can effectively maintain the stability of drugs, extend the shelf life of drugs, and prevent chemical reactions of drugs.

3. Used in cosmetics

Silicon oxide can be used as sunscreen, skin care products, etc. It has excellent hygroscopic and lubricating properties, which can help regulate the moisture balance of the skin.

4. Used in food

Silicon oxide can be used as a moisture-proof agent, anti-caking agent, rheological agent, stabilizer, etc. for food. It can effectively reduce the absorption of moisture and prevent food from spoiling.

5. Used in building materials

Silicon oxide can be used as a filler, thickener, etc. for building materials. It can improve the hardness and stability of building materials and extend the service life of building materials.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

VI HALBLEITERMATERIAL GmbH (VIMATERIAL) employs a stringent quality assurance system to ensure the reliability of our product quality. Strict quality control is implemented throughout the entire production chain, and for defective products, we strictly enforce the principle of rework and redo. Each batch is released only after passing detailed specification tests.

Every batch of our materials is independently tested, and, if necessary, we send samples to certified companies for testing. We provide these documents and analysis certificates with the shipment to certify that our products meet the required standards.
