Silicon chloride (Silicon tetrachloride) is an important inorganic compound with the chemical formula SiCI4 and a molar mass of 169.896g/mol. This compound is a colorless liquid at room temperature and has unique physical and chemical properties.

Physical and chemical properties

Silicon chloride is a colorless, transparent, fuming liquid with a density of 1.483g/mL, a melting point of -70°C, a boiling point of 57.6°C, and a refractive index of 1.412.

Silicon chloride is flammable and asphyxiating, and is miscible with benzene, ether, chloroform, petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, tin tetrachloride, and titanium tetrachloride. It releases heat when in contact with water, and decomposes into silicic acid and hydrogen chloride, and reacts violently when in contact with alcohol. It is easy to flow, easy to volatilize, and has an unpleasant suffocating odor. It can corrode most metals when water is present.

Preparation and process

There are two main methods for preparing silicon tetrachloride:

One is to prepare it through the chlorination reaction of silicon compounds (such as ferrosilicon alloy, silicon carbide, etc.) or a mixture of silicon dioxide and carbon;

The other is to obtain it through direct chemical combination of silicon and chlorine under laboratory conditions. Among them, the chlorination of ferrosilicon alloy to produce silicon tetrachloride is the most commonly used method. This method has the advantages of mature process and low cost. During the preparation process, it is necessary to control the reaction temperature, reaction time and other conditions to ensure the purity and yield of the product.

In addition, when preparing silicon chloride in the laboratory, it is usually necessary to carry out at a high temperature of -600℃, which has high requirements for experimental equipment and technology.

Application of silicon chloride

Silicon tetrachloride is a by-product of the production of high-purity silicon, and is also the main raw material for the production of optical fiber preforms. It is also the main raw material for inorganic silicon, organic silicon, and rubber industries. It is used in electronics, aviation, precision casting and other fields.

In the electronics industry, silicon tetrachloride is widely used to manufacture semiconductor materials such as silicon chips and silicon wafers.

In the aviation field, silicon chloride is used to manufacture high-temperature materials such as ceramics and metal alloys.

In the field of precision casting, silicon tetrachloride is used to manufacture precision castings, such as automobile engine cylinders, aircraft engine impellers, etc.

Safety precautions

Silicon tetrachloride is toxic and may cause poisoning if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin. It is highly irritating to the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, and other tissues. Therefore, during production and operation, it is necessary to pay attention to the airtightness of the equipment and the operators wearing protective equipment to avoid direct contact.

In addition, silicon chloride should be stored in a cool, ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources, and avoid direct sunlight. The packaging must be sealed and cannot come into contact with air.
