Basic information:

Chemical formula: sm₂O₃, composed of rare earth elements samarium (Sm) and oxygen (O).
CAS No.: 12060 – 58 – 1.
Appearance: usually light yellow powdery granules, but the colour may vary slightly depending on the purity, particle size and other factors.
Density: Relative density is high, about 8.347 g/cm³.
Melting point: High melting point, approx. 2335°C.

Chemical properties:

Stability: it is more stable at room temperature and pressure, but its chemical stability will be affected in harsh environments such as high temperature, strong acid and alkali. It is easy to absorb carbon dioxide and water in the air, and a certain degree of chemical reaction may occur.

Oxidising properties: it has a certain degree of oxidising properties, although its oxidising ability is relatively weak.

Application field:

Permanent magnetic material: Samarium Oxide can be used to prepare samarium cobalt permanent magnets, which have high magnetic properties and are widely used in electric motors, electronic equipment, aerospace and other fields.

Optical glass: Samarium Oxide used as additive of optical glass and infrared absorbing glass, which can absorb infrared radiation and used to make special optical glass.

Catalyst: It can be used as catalyst or carrier of catalyst for some chemical reactions, such as dehydration and dehydrogenation reaction of alcohols.

Neutron shielding material: due to the good absorption ability of neutron, it can be used to prepare neutron shielding material, which has important applications in the field of nuclear industry.
