Ruthenium metal granules are granular materials with ruthenium (Ru) as the main component. Ruthenium is a rare transition metal and belongs to the platinum group of metals. These granules are usually black or dark grey in colour and have a metallic lustre.

Characteristics

Density and hardness: Ruthenium has a relatively high density of approx. 12.45 g/cm³, which makes ruthenium particles heavy. Its hardness is also relatively high, around 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. This hardness gives it good resistance to wear and deformation and enables it to maintain the integrity of the particles when subjected to certain external forces.

Melting point and thermal conductivity: Ruthenium has a melting point of 2334 °C, which means that ruthenium particles are thermally stable at high temperatures. It also has good thermal conductivity, which enables it to conduct heat efficiently during temperature changes and prevents localised overheating, a property that is important in applications involving high temperatures.

Magnetic properties: Ruthenium is a weakly magnetic metal. Although not as pronounced as strongly magnetic materials such as iron or nickel, the magnetic properties of ruthenium particles may be useful in specific magnetic applications or in scenarios where they interact with magnetic materials.

Chemical stability: At room temperature, ruthenium metal particles show good resistance to most chemicals. It is relatively stable in air and is not easily oxidised. However, at high temperatures or in the presence of strong oxidising agents, ruthenium can also undergo chemical reactions. For example, ruthenium can be dissolved in strong oxidising acids such as aqua regia.

Catalytic activity: Ruthenium metal particles are an important catalyst material. It shows excellent catalytic properties in many chemical reactions, e.g. in hydrogenation, oxidation and isomerisation reactions. This is due to the fact that the electronic structure and surface properties of ruthenium atoms enable it to effectively adsorb and activate reactant molecules, facilitating the reaction.

Applications

Catalysts: Ruthenium metal particles are key catalysts for many industrial chemical reactions. In petrochemistry, they are used in processes such as hydrocracking and hydrofinishing to convert heavy petroleum fractions into lighter oils and at the same time remove impurities such as sulphur, nitrogen and other compounds from them.

In the field of electronic materials: for the manufacture of electronic components such as resistors and capacitors. Ruthenium particles can be combined with other materials or used as a coating material to improve the performance of electronic components, e.g. to increase the stability of resistors or the capacitance of capacitors.

Electroplating: Plating ruthenium particles on metal surfaces that require wear and corrosion resistance improves the hardness and corrosion resistance of the surfaces. For example, ruthenium plating is applied to the surfaces of high-grade jewellery or metal parts of precision instruments to prolong their service life and enhance their aesthetics.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

VI HALBLEITERMATERIAL GmbH (VIMATERIAL) employs a stringent quality assurance system to ensure the reliability of our product quality. Strict quality control is implemented throughout the entire production chain, and for defective products, we strictly enforce the principle of rework and redo. Each batch is released only after passing detailed specification tests.

Every batch of our materials is independently tested, and, if necessary, we send samples to certified companies for testing. We provide these documents and analysis certificates with the shipment to certify that our products meet the required standards.
