Rhenium (V) chloride powder is a dark green to black inorganic compound with a density of 4.9 g/cm³, a melting point of about 220°C, moisture sensitivity and a strong irritating odour. It is used as a starting material for the synthesis of other compounds of rhenium and as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It is stable at room temperature, but easy to decompose when heated, and can react with many organic and inorganic substances.
