Potassium molybdate (K2MoO4) is an important inorganic compound composed of potassium ions and molybdate ions. It is usually a white crystalline powder, soluble in water and has a certain degree of toxicity. Potassium molybdate is widely used in industrial production in the fields of catalysts, preservatives, electroplating processes and chemical raw materials.

Physical properties

Appearance and form: White fine crystalline powder. It is deliquescent and hygroscopic.

Density: 2.3 g/mL

Melting point: 919℃

Boiling point: 1400℃

Solubility: It is easily soluble in water, but insoluble in ethanol and ether. It is stable in the air and gradually darkens when exposed to light.

Chemical properties

Acidity and alkalinity: Potassium molybdate is weakly alkaline and can react with strong acids to form corresponding salts.

Oxidizing property: Molybdate has strong oxidizing property and can be reduced by some reducing agents such as ferrous ions. For example, under acidic conditions, potassium molybdate can oxidize potassium iodide into elemental iodine (I2) and itself is reduced to molybdenum blue (Mo3O2).

Complexity: Potassium molybdate can form complexes with a variety of metal ions. For example, it can react with lead ions to form a yellow precipitate.

Thermal stability: Potassium molybdate decomposes at high temperatures to produce oxygen and molybdenum trioxide.

Preparations

K2MoO4 can be prepared by a variety of methods, including neutralization, precipitation and calcination. Among them, the neutralization method is the most commonly used method, which is to neutralize potassium hydroxide solution with industrial molybdenum trioxide or molybdic acid, and then filter, concentrate, cool and crystallize, centrifuge, dry and other steps to obtain the finished product.

Applications

Potassium molybdate is used in many fields, mainly including:

1. Catalyst: As a raw material for polyacid catalysts, it is used to catalyze a variety of chemical reactions.

2. Analytical reagent: used for the inspection of alkaloids and the determination of available phosphorus in phosphate fertilizers.

3. Other fields: It can also be used in dyes, pigments, rust inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors and pharmaceutical industries.

Safety and toxicity

Hazard classification: Potassium molybdate is a hazardous product and has a certain irritating effect on the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Therefore, appropriate protective measures should be taken during use and handling.

First aid measures: If potassium molybdate is accidentally touched or inhaled, it should be immediately rinsed with plenty of water and medical help should be sought.

Storage conditions

Storage: K2MoO4 should be stored at room temperature, avoiding high temperature and humid environment to prevent deliquescence and deterioration.

Packing: Common packaging specifications include 500 grams, 1 kilogram and 25 kilograms, etc. Different specifications are suitable for different usage needs.
