Hafnium oxychloride hydrate powder is a compound powder containing hafnium, chlorine, oxygen and water of crystallisation, usually white or off-white in colour, and is an important raw material in the chemical and chemical fields for the preparation of a wide range of hafnium-related materials, such as hafnium oxide.

Properties

Composition: Composed of hafnium (Hf), oxygen (O), chlorine (Cl) and water (H₂O), it is a hydrated hafnium compound.

Appearance: usually white crystalline powder.

Molecular weight: Theoretically, the molecular weight of HfOCl2-8H2O is about 217.46 g/mol, and the molecular weight of each water molecule is about 18 g/mol, so the molecular weight is about 217.46 + 8×18 = 361.46 g/mol.

Reactivity: It is relatively stable in aqueous solution, but reacts with strong bases. It has a certain solubility in hydrochloric acid solution, and the solubility varies with the concentration of hydrochloric acid.

Hazard class: is a hazardous chemical.

Application

Preparation of precursors for hafnium-based materials:

Synthesis of Hafnium Oxide (HfO2): Hafnium oxychloride hydrate can be converted to hafnium oxide by subsequent treatments such as thermal decomposition and hydrolysis. Hafnium oxide is an important high-k dielectric material used in the semiconductor field for the manufacture of microelectronic devices such as gate insulating layers, capacitors and other electronic components, which can improve the performance and stability of the device.

Preparation of other hafnium compounds: such as for the synthesis of hafnium nitride (HfN), hafnium carbide (HfC) and so on. Hafnium nitride has high hardness, high melting point and good chemical stability, which can be applied to high-temperature structural materials, cutting tools, etc. Hafnium carbide, on the other hand, has a very high melting point and hardness, which is suitable for wear-resistant coatings, ultra-high-temperature ceramics and other fields.

In the field of luminescent materials: it can be used as a raw material for the preparation of luminescent materials. For example, in the preparation of HfO3:Ce nanoluminescent powder, Hafnium oxychloride hydrate reacts with other reagents to provide hafnium element for luminescent materials. This kind of nano-luminescent powder has potential applications in optics, electronics and other fields, and can be used to manufacture phosphors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and so on.

Application in the preparation of carbon-based composites: It can be used to prepare refractory metal carbide-modified carbon/carbon (C/C) composites. The aqueous solution of Hafnium oxychloride hydrate is impregnated into carbon felt and other carbon-based materials, and after a series of heat treatment and chemical reaction, hafnium element can be introduced into the carbon-based materials to form hafnium-containing carbides, thus improving the ablation-resistant and high-temperature-resistant properties of the carbon-based composites, which can be applied in the fields of aerospace and other areas that have high requirements on the performance of materials.

Applications in scientific research and laboratories: Hafnium oxychloride hydrate is used as a chemical reagent in relevant scientific research and experiments to help researchers explore the nature of hafnium compounds, reaction mechanisms and so on. For example, it is used to study the hydrolysis reaction of hafnium compounds, the formation of complexes and other basic chemical research.
