Characteristics
Chemical formula: GeO₂.
Appearance and color: usually white powder, may also appear colorless crystal.
Crystal structure: diamond tetragonal and mesostable α-quartz hexagonal, hexagonal is stable at low temperature, but will change to tetragonal when heated to 1033°C.
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, insoluble in acids, but soluble in strong alkali solutions to form germanium (IV) acid salts.
Melting and boiling point: melting point approx. 1115°C, significant volatilization at 1250°C.
