Germanium ingot is a kind of massive metal material made of high purity germanium element.

 

Basic properties:

 

Appearance: Germanium ingot is usually a silver-gray metal block, the surface has a metallic luster, a closer look may have a polycrystalline pattern.

Density: 5.35g/cm3

Hardness: about 5.0, brittle, easy to break

Melting point :937.4℃

Boiling point: 2830℃, with a high melting boiling point.

 

Germanium insoluble in hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and alkali, but soluble in hydrofluoric acid, aqua regia and hot sodium hydroxide solution, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide dissolution rate is faster.

 

Production process:

 

Raw materials: The raw materials of germanium mainly come from germanium-containing ores, such as silver germanite, as well as copper, lead, zinc smelting byproducts. After a series of pretreatment, such as crushing and beneficiation, these germanium-containing minerals can obtain concentrates with higher Germanium content.

 

Purification process: The common purification methods are zone melting method. Zoned germanium ingot is purified by zoned method. The purity of qualified product is above 99.9999%.

 

Application field:

 

Semiconductor industry: Germanium metal can be used to manufacture semiconductor devices, such as transistors, integrated circuits, etc.

 

Infrared optics: Germanium metal often used to make Windows, lenses, prisms and filters for thermal imagers and other infrared optical devices.

 

Nuclear physics detection field: Germanium metal can be used as an ionizing radiation detector to detect gamma spectrum and X-ray spectrum, etc., and has important applications in nuclear physics research and nuclear radiation monitoring.

 

Chemical catalyst field: Germanium dioxide is a catalyst for polymerization, and the germanium glass made with it has a higher refractive index and dispersion than silicate glass.
