Gadolinium oxide powder is a white amorphous or light yellow, hygroscopic, insoluble in water but soluble in acid, melting point of about 2330 ℃, commonly used in optical glass, medical, nuclear industry and other fields of rare earth oxides powder
Properties
Appearance: usually white amorphous or light yellow powder.
Density: Relatively high density, about 7.41g/cm³, which makes Gadolinium Oxide powder has good stability and weight in some applications.
Melting point: High melting point of about 2339°C, with high thermal stability, able to maintain the stability of structure and properties in high temperature environment.
Crystalline structure: Cubic, monoclinic and hexagonal structures exist. Gadolinium oxide with a cubic structure transforms to a monoclinic structure at 1200°C, whereas gadolinium oxide phases with a hexagonal structure exist at temperatures above the melting point (about 2420°C).
Solubility: insoluble in water, but soluble in acids, and reacts with acids to form corresponding salt compounds.
Stability: It is easily deteriorated by absorbing moisture and carbon dioxide in air, and can interact with ammonia to produce gadolinium hydrate precipitate.
Applications
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) contrast agent: It can be used to improve the contrast of MRI imaging, make the lesion tissue more clearly visible, and help doctors diagnose the disease more accurately.
Sensitised fluorescent materials: Gadolinium oxide is used as a sensitised fluorescent material in medical devices to improve the sensitivity and performance of medical devices.
Optical field:
Optical glass: Gadolinium oxide is used in the manufacture of highly refractive, low dispersion optical glass. Used with lanthanum, it contributes to changes in the vitrification region and improves the thermal stability of the glass, and can also be used as an optical prism additive.
Laser materials: in the preparation of certain laser materials, gadolinium oxide can be used as a dopant to improve the performance of laser materials.
Nuclear reactor control materials: Gadolinium oxide can be used to control the speed and stability of nuclear reactions, and can also be used as neutron absorbing materials, neutron filters, neutron shielding and neutron detectors in atomic reactors.
Electronic field: Gadolinium oxide can be used in the preparation of magnetic materials, magnetic bubble materials, capacitors and other electronic components, such as magnetic components applied to smart phones, laptops and other electronic devices.
Catalyst field: it can be used for the preparation of many kinds of catalysts, such as petroleum and environmental protection catalysts.
