Gadolinium metal particles are rare earth metal particles with silver-white or yellowish appearance, paramagnetic, good ductility, easily oxidised in humid air, density 7.901g/cm³, melting point about 1312°C, boiling point about 3250°C. It is widely used in medical, industrial, scientific and research fields. It has a wide range of applications in the medical, industrial and scientific fields.

Applications

Medical field: Gadolinium metal is used as a gadolinium-containing contrast agent (GBCA) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is used to enhance the image quality of internal organs, blood vessels and tissues, and help doctors diagnose diseases more accurately. Its water-soluble paramagnetic complex improves nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging signals in humans.

Industrial: Gadolinium – potassium – garnet is used as a dielectric material in magnetic bubble memory devices, which can be used for information gathering. It can be used in optical fibres, optical discs (combining magnetic and optical properties), etc. It is used as an alloying additive to give special properties to speciality steels, and as a petroleum, chemical and environmental catalyst.

In nuclear energy: Gadolinium isotopes have a large neutron absorption cross-section and can be used as control rods and neutron absorbers in light water reactors and fast breeder reactors.

Other aspects: it can be used as a fluorescent agent for photographic X-ray film; as a solid magnetic refrigeration medium in the absence of Carnot cycle limitations; and as an inhibitor to control the level of chain reactions in nuclear power plants to ensure the safety of nuclear reactions.
