Cadmium Selenide powder is a compound powder consisting of cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se) in a variety of colours (e.g. yellow to deep red) with semiconducting properties, which has important applications in photovoltaics and photovoltaics and is closely related to its crystal structure and optical properties.

Characteristics

Chemical formula: CdSe

Molecular weight: 191.37

Appearance: Grey-brown or red crystalline powder.

Density: Relative density is 5.81 g/cm³ (15℃).

Melting point: >1350°C.

Solubility: insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, almost insoluble in other common organic solvents.

Refractive index: 2.87 (900nm).

Stability: relatively stable at room temperature, but need to avoid heat, contact with humid air and contact with strong oxidising agents, strong acids and other substances. Stability is good when stored under suitable conditions, but toxic hydrogen selenide gas will be produced when exposed to heat or acid.

Reactivity: it can react with dilute nitric acid and decompose, and it is easy to react with oxidising agents, strong acids and other substances. The decomposition product is mainly selenium oxide.

Optical properties: with unique optical properties, it is an important semiconductor material with good light absorption and fluorescence properties in the visible to near-infrared region, and can be used to manufacture infrared detectors, photosensitive elements, and light conductors.
Toxicity Data:

Other Properties: Semiconductor properties, important applications in the field of electronic emitters, spectral analysis.

Applications

Optoelectronic field:

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs): Cadmium selenide has a suitable energy band structure, which can efficiently convert electrical energy into light energy, and is used as a light-emitting material in the manufacture of LEDs for the production of LEDs of various colours, especially in the visible light range with good light-emitting properties.

Solar Cells: Its semiconductor properties allow it to be used in the manufacture of thin film solar cells. Cadmium selenide-based thin-film solar cells can effectively absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity with high photoelectric conversion efficiency and relatively low cost, making it a promising material for solar cells.

Photodetectors: can be used to make photodetectors that detect and respond to light of specific wavelengths. For example, in optical fibre communication systems, it is used to detect the intensity and change of optical signals.

Laser diodes: Cadmium selenide can be used as a material for laser diodes, which are used to generate laser light. Laser diodes have a wide range of applications in laser printing, laser ranging, and optical communications.

Biomedical field:

Bio-imaging: cadmium selenide quantum dots have important applications in biomedical imaging. They have unique optical properties, such as high fluorescence intensity, narrow emission spectrum, good light stability, etc. They can be used as fluorescent probes for cell imaging, tissue imaging, etc., and can provide high-resolution image information for medical research and clinical diagnosis.

Bio-detection: It can be used for the detection of biological molecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids. By binding specifically to biomolecules and using changes in their fluorescence signals to detect the presence and concentration of biomolecules, it provides a sensitive detection method for disease diagnosis and biological research.

Infrared optics field: Cadmium selenide can be used to produce infrared window materials due to its transparency to infrared radiation. In infrared thermal imaging systems, infrared detectors and other infrared optical equipment, infrared windows made of cadmium selenide can allow infrared light to pass through, and at the same time play a role in protecting the internal optical components.

Chemical Sensor Field: Cadmium selenide nanoparticles can be used to develop chemical sensors for detecting various gases and environmental pollutants. When a specific gas is present, it will cause a change in the conductivity or fluorescence emission of the cadmium selenide nanoparticles, thus realising the detection of the gas, which can be used for environmental monitoring and air quality testing.

Catalysis field: Cadmium selenide nanoparticles have unique surface properties, which can be used as catalysts in chemical reactions. For example, in the photocatalytic reaction, the use of its electron – cavity pairs generated under the light to promote the chemical reaction, can be used in organic synthesis, pollutant degradation and so on.
