Barium Sulfide powder is an important inorganic compound.
Appearance: usually white crystalline powder, but industrial products are usually light brown or black powder, also in lumps. It may be phosphorescent when it contains traces of impurities.
Density: Relative density is 4.25g/cm³.
Melting point: 1200°C.
Solubility: soluble in water, dissolved and hydrolysed to Ba (HS)₂ and Ba (OH)₂.
Hydrolysis: Gradually hydrolysed to barium hydroxide and hydrogen sulphide in contact with water, the aqueous solution is strongly alkaline and corrosive, able to burn the skin and make the hair fall off.
Reaction with acid: hydrogen sulphide gas will be released when it meets acid (including carbon dioxide in humid air).
Oxidation reaction: easily oxidised in humid air.
Chemical industry: Barium Sulfide is an important raw material for the production of various barium compounds, such as for the preparation of calcium sulphide, strontium sulphide and so on.
Electronic industry: as an electronic material, it can be used in the manufacture of electronic components, and it is also the substrate of luminescent powder, which is used in electronic display and other fields.
Petrochemical industry: Used in desulphurisation process to remove sulphur compounds in gas.
