YSZ (ytria – stabilized Zirconia) is a ceramic material composed of zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) stabilized by yttria (y₂O₃). By adding yttria, the phase transition temperature range of zirconium dioxide is changed to produce cubic and tetragonal crystals that are stable at room temperature. Due to the stabilization process, it has excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability and chemical stability, so it has been widely used in many fields.

This article will give a detailed introduction to the structure, properties, preparation method and application of yttrium-stabilized zirconia.

I. Structure of yttrium-stabilized zirconia

Yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is a zirconia ceramic material stabilized by adding yttrium oxide (Y2O3).

The structure of YSZ is a lattice-type oxide with certain conductivity.

Ytria-stabilized Zirconia has good thermal expansion coefficient, high melting point, high hardness, low thermal conductivity and other characteristics, and can maintain stable performance in high temperature and strong corrosion environment.

II. Properties of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconia

1. Mechanical Properties

High Strength and Toughness: YSZ has a high fracture toughness compared to other ceramics, making it more resistant to cracking and mechanical failure.

Hardness: Yttrium-stabilized zirconia is a very hard material, making it suitable for wear-resistant applications such as cutting tools and bearings.

Density: It has a high density, typically around 6.05 g/cm³, which helps improve its mechanical strength and thermal properties.

Wear Resistance: Yttrium-stabilized zirconia has excellent wear resistance and is well suited for applications in abrasive environments.

2. Thermal Properties

High Temperature Stability: YSZ can withstand temperatures up to 2400°C, making it suitable for high temperature applications such as thermal barrier coatings in gas turbines and engines.

Low Thermal Conductivity: One of the outstanding features of Yttrium-stabilized zirconia is its low thermal conductivity, making it an efficient thermal insulation material. This property is critical for applications such as thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aerospace and industrial gas turbines.

Thermal expansion: Yttrium-stabilized zirconia has a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of metals and has better thermal shock resistance when used in combination with metal substrates.

3. Conductive properties

Oxygen ion conductivity: YSZ is an excellent oxygen ion conductor and is a key material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and oxygen sensors.

Electrolyte properties: The high ionic conductivity and low electronic conductivity of YSZ make it an ideal electrolyte in high-temperature electrochemical devices.

4. Chemical properties

Corrosion resistance: YSZ is chemically inert and resistant to corrosive environments, making it suitable for use in harsh chemical environments or environments where chemical stability is critical.

Anti-oxidation: Yttrium-stabilized zirconia has strong anti-oxidation properties, which is critical for high-temperature and oxidizing environments such as combustion chambers and fuel cells.

III. Preparation method of yttrium-stabilized zirconia

1. Powder metallurgy method:

After mixing zirconium oxide and yttrium oxide, react at high temperature to obtain YSZ powder, and then prepare it into products through processes such as molding and sintering.

2. Sol-gel method:

After mixing zirconium oxide and yttrium oxide solutions, undergo hydrolysis, polycondensation and other reactions to form a gel, and then undergo drying, sintering and other processes to prepare it into products.

3. Sputtering method:

Under a high vacuum environment, sputtering technology is used to sputter zirconium oxide and yttrium oxide targets onto a substrate to form a Yttrium-stabilized zirconia film.
