Terbium Acetate Hydrate

Chemical formula: Tb (CH₃COO)₃・xH₂O, where ‘x’ stands for the amount of water of crystallisation, and the exact value will vary depending on the preparation conditions and other factors.
Molar mass: about 354.07 g/mol (when x = 0, only the relative molecular mass of the terbium portion of acetic acid is considered).
Density: 3.56 g/cm³.
Appearance: usually white powder, crystal or granular solid.
Solubility: soluble in water, can form a transparent solution in water; also moderately soluble in strong mineral acids.

Chemical Properties:

Under heating conditions, the water of crystallisation is gradually lost and a dehydration reaction occurs. With further increase in temperature, acetate will decompose to produce the corresponding products such as oxides.

It can react chemically with other compounds, e.g. with alkali to form terbium hydroxide precipitate.

Uses:

Activator of green phosphor: In display equipment such as colour TV picture tubes, as an activator of green phosphor, Terbium Acetate Hydrate can enhance the luminescence performance of phosphor and make the image display clearer and more vivid.

Special laser materials: Terbium Acetate Hydrate used in the manufacture of special lasers, with important applications in the field of laser technology.

Magnetostrictive material: Terbium Acetate Hydrate is one of the components of the magnetostrictive material Terfenol-D, which has a large magnetostrictive effect and has a wide range of applications in the fields of sensors and transducers.
